What is Stage Design?

Stage design is the architecture of attention — and as a stage design company based in Portland, Oregon, Beatrox designs, engineers, and builds stages for productions nationwide. It's the physical and visual environment that frames a performance, keynote, or presentation — the structure, surfaces, lighting positions, and sightlines that determine what every person in the room sees and feels. A great stage doesn't just hold the show; it becomes part of the story. You need stage design when a rental deck and a drape line won't carry the concept. A product launch that needs the reveal built into the architecture, a touring artist whose set piece has to fly in any orientation, a conference stage that has to read on camera as well as it reads in the room — these are design problems, not equipment problems. Done well, stage design disappears into the experience. The audience never thinks about load ratings or sightline studies — they just know the moment felt massive. Beatrox handles the full stage design arc: concept development, pre-visualization, engineering, fabrication, and on-site installation — with lighting, projection, and media integration designed in from the first sketch rather than layered on afterward. For BuzzFeed's 2016 NewFronts at Moynihan Station in New York, we designed and built a custom presentation stage with full projection mapping integration, surrounded by individually mapped projection orbs suspended throughout the venue. For Create Our Future with Urban Outfitters x Adidas at Mack Sennett Studio in Los Angeles, the centerpiece was a projection-mapped 270-degree Cyclone Wall — a self-climbing truss system that wrapped the stage in full-surround visuals for live performances including Phantogram. For Destination with Journey's x Adidas at Horton Plaza Park in San Diego, we engineered a 40-foot tall structure that served as both stage presence and interactive canvas. And for Adriatique's worldwide X Future tour, Projekt X delivered a modular X-shaped set piece built from aircraft-grade aluminum with edge-lit DMX addressable LEDs — engineered to California safety standards, pixel-mappable, laser-mappable, and designed to fly in any orientation at any venue on the tour.

Can you design a stage that travels?

Yes — touring is a core part of our stage work. We design for crating, freight, and repeat assembly, as we did with the modular Projekt X set piece for Adriatique's worldwide tour, which was engineered to be rigged in any orientation at any venue.

Do you handle the engineering and safety documentation?

Every stage we design comes with full engineering documentation — load calculations, rigging plots, and where required, engineering stamps. Projekt X shipped with drawings and load specifications meeting California safety standards, among the strictest in the industry.

Can the stage incorporate projection or LED?

That's our specialty. We design stages as media surfaces from day one — projection-mapped scenic, LED integration, and pixel-mappable elements are planned into the structure, as on the BuzzFeed NewFronts stage and the Create Our Future Cyclone Wall.

How early should stage design start?

Ideally 8–12 weeks before load-in. Custom scenic lead times, engineering review, and venue approvals all run smoother with an early start — but we've also delivered on compressed timelines when the production demands it.
