What is Projection Mapping?

Projection mapping is the craft of turning real-world geometry into a display — a craft our Portland, Oregon team has practiced on canvases nationwide, from brand activations to the Empire State Building. Instead of projecting onto a flat screen, content is engineered to the exact contours of a building, a stage set, a sphere, or an entire room — so the surface itself appears to move, transform, and tell the story. Done right, the projector vanishes and the architecture comes alive. You need projection mapping when the venue is the message. A product launch that transforms the room around the guests, a stage design that shifts scene without moving a single flat, a landmark facade that becomes election-night television — these are moments no LED wall can replicate, because the canvas already means something. The discipline is equal parts art and metrology. Surfaces are measured, projectors are positioned and blended to the millimeter, and content is warped to real geometry. Beatrox handles that full chain — and has done it on canvases from a Manhattan bodega to the Empire State Building.

What BEATROX Provides

Beatrox delivers projection mapping end to end: surface analysis, projector system design, content production, multi-projector blending and calibration, media server programming, and live operation. The same team that maps the surface produces the content — so what you approve in pre-visualization is what appears on the wall. For the DUBAI 360 spherical projection theatre in Dubai Mall, we delivered content and deployment for DUBAI 360 & Obscura Digital on a fully spherical canvas — imagery engineered to surround the audience with no visible seams. With PROJECTING CHANGE: Racing Extinction for the Oceanic Preservation Society & Obscura Digital, projection content was designed for some of the world's most recognizable canvases, including the Empire State Building, the United Nations in New York, and the Vatican in Rome. For CNN: Road to 270 with CNN & Obscura Digital, we built projection and interactive visual content on the Empire State Building for election-night storytelling at landmark scale. And at Super Bowl 2020 in Miami, we transformed Ampersand Studios into an immersive Adidas VIP headquarters — custom projection content pre-visualized and calibrated to wrap the architecture of the venue in dynamic branded visuals for the full Super Bowl weekend.

How We Work

  1. 01Surface Study — We measure or scan the canvas and assess sightlines and ambient light
  2. 02System Design — Projector count, placement, lenses, and blending zones engineered
  3. 03Pre-Visualization — The mapped show rendered on the real geometry for approval
  4. 04Content Production — Imagery built to the surface's exact template and timing
  5. 05Calibration & Alignment — Multi-projector blend, warp, and focus dialed on site
  6. 06Show Operation — Media servers programmed, rehearsed, and operated live

Frequently Asked Questions

What surfaces can be projection mapped?

Nearly anything that reflects light — buildings, stage sets, spheres, cars, water features, entire rooms. Irregular surfaces are our specialty: content is warped to the measured geometry, so the odder the canvas, the more striking the result.

Does projection mapping work outdoors?

Yes — with the right engineering. Outdoor shows account for ambient light, weather, and throw distances, and use high-lumen projector stacks. Our landmark facade work, including the Empire State Building and the Vatican, was all outdoor.

How long does it take to produce a mapping show?

A single-evening activation with existing content can turn around in a few weeks. A custom content show on a complex surface typically needs 6–10 weeks for surveying, content production, and calibration. We scope timelines during the surface study.

Can mapped content sync to a live show?

Absolutely. We lock projection content to timecode and show calling for concerts, broadcasts, and run-of-show-driven events — the same discipline behind CNN: Road to 270's election-night operation.
