What is Consultation & System Design?

Consultation and system design is the thinking that happens before the spending — and Beatrox provides it from Portland, Oregon for events and installations nationwide. It's the process of translating a creative goal — an interactive wall, a flagship event, a permanent installation — into a concrete technical system: what equipment, in what configuration, at what cost, maintained by whom. You need this service whenever the technical path isn't obvious. Maybe you're weighing LED against projection, temporary rental against permanent install, or wondering whether a bold creative idea is even feasible in your venue. An experienced systems consultant answers those questions with numbers and drawings, not guesses. Good system design saves money twice: once by speccing only what you actually need, and again by preventing the expensive mistakes — undersized power, incompatible formats, unmaintainable installations — that plague under-planned projects.

What BEATROX Provides

Our consultation deliverables include system architecture diagrams, equipment schedules, signal flow plans, power and infrastructure requirements, budget ranges with value-engineering options, and maintenance roadmaps. For permanent work, we design for reliability first — commercial-grade components, serviceable layouts, and documentation your facilities team can actually use. Because we also produce events and build installations, our advice comes from people who have operated the systems they spec. For FLIR, we designed and delivered a permanent interactive history wall at their Washington, DC headquarters — an ultra-wide display system with LIDAR sensors, a media server, and AI computer vision that assigns unique IDs to visitors so multiple people can interact simultaneously without interference. It was engineered from the start for daily reliability and low maintenance. We've brought the same consulting discipline to exhibition work for Netflix — including El Camino in New York — and to large-scale event systems like BuzzFeed's 2016 NewFronts at Moynihan Station, where a custom stage, individually mapped projection orbs, media server playback, and full lighting programming had to be planned as one integrated system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only consult on projects you'll also build?

No. We're happy to consult independently — many clients take our system designs to bid or hand them to internal teams. That said, keeping design and execution together usually saves time and money.

Can you design systems for permanent installations?

Yes. Permanent work like the FLIR Interactive History Wall is designed to commercial reliability standards, with serviceable hardware layouts and full documentation for your facilities team.

How is consultation priced?

Typically as a fixed-fee design phase scoped to project complexity, or as part of a larger design-build engagement. We define deliverables and cost before any work begins.

Can you review an existing quote or system proposal?

Absolutely. Second-opinion reviews of vendor proposals are one of the fastest ways we save clients money — we flag overspec, underspec, and compatibility risks before you sign.
